Petition Title: Piriton Syrup 5 ml sachet request to GlaxoSmithKline
United Kingdom By MsCRobinson

Location: The World, United Kingdom
Updated on 3/10/2010
Created on 2/23/2010

Some people have been asking why would anyone want Piriton Sachets. Here are some answers:

  • The bottles can be prone to leakage!
  • They need to be kept upright!
  • A measuring spoon is also needed to administer the correct dosage!
  • They can sometimes be scrutinised and need to be justified at airport security!
  • After use the bottle and spoon are very sticky!
  • Sachets can be disposed of after use!
  • Young people and young adults who are at risk of anaphylaxis and are required to carry Antihistamines, don't always!!  Because of some of the reasons above! Sachets would be ideal for them!!
  • EVERYONE who is at risk of anaphylaxis has to carry antihistamines, EVERYWHERE! - Visiting, Swimming, School, Scouts, Holidays, Parties, Discos, Restaurants etc!!!
  • TABLETS ARE NOT ALWAYS AN OPTION FOR PEOPLE AT RISK OF ANAPHYLAXIS BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE THROAT SWELLING AND BREATHING DIFFICULTIES!
  • Can 'YOU' imagine trying to measure out 5 mls of liquid on a spoon to administer to someone who is having an allergic reaction and possible anaphylaxis...!!

These are just some of the reasons. Please support by signing if you agree that Sachets would be convenient and practical and would like them to be available for use.

This petition is to lobby GlaxoSmithKline to produce Piriton Syrup (chlorphenamine maleate) in 5 ml sachets.

GlaxoSmithKline have in previous years stated there was no demand for sachet production.
Due to the vast amount of allergy sufferers who are required  to carry Piriton with them at all times, I believe this is not the case and there is in fact a very large demand.

When contacted by the Anaphylaxis Campaign in early 2008 to say they had received a number of calls and emails over the years from people asking for the availability of Piriton Syrup in sachet form, the response from GlaxoSmithKline was that they also had a similar number of enquiries and they were investigating the possibility of producing sachets.
THEY ALSO SUGGESTED THAT THE MORE REQUESTS THEY RECEIVED THE MORE LIKELY IT WOULD BE THAT THE SACHETS WOULD BE PRODUCED!

Requests by individuals have received a similar response, with GlaxoSmithKline replying that they were reviewing the suggestion to launch Piriton Syrup in sachets but it required intensive investigation and would not be an option they would be able to launch in the immediate future. This was over two years ago!

I will be submitting this petition to GlaxoSmithKline on behalf of all the people who would like to see this product available for our use.

Please sign and pass this petition on if you agree.

Thank you
Christine Robinson

Follow up: I have been informed by The Anaphylaxis Campaign that they have been submitting requests about Piriton sachets for over 5 years. A recent enquiry by them received the same response from GSK it did 3 years ago!

If you are the parent of a child who needs to keep Piriton at School or carry with them to other activities they attend, (Scouts, Swimming, etc) please do not hesitate to ask if they would support and sign this petition.

Thank you to the people that have signed so far, but I notice mostly female names...If your male partners, friends and families (Grandparents etc)  support this petition ...Please urge them to sign also we need as many signatures as possible!

It would be life saving in many cases and very usefull to many parents. Surely financially this makes sense!

IF THERE WERE 5ML SACHETS OF PIRITON MY 7 YEAR OLD SON COULD RETURN TO SCHOOL. Chlorphenamine Maleate (Piriton) can be a life-saver for some allergy sufferers, so this isn't just an issue of convenience. My son has severe multiple food allergies(to over 30 kinds of foods); the extent of his allergies means that, despite a careful diet he is still exposed to more contaminants than someone with 2 or 3 allergies and therefore has more severe reactions. When he has a reaction his first treatment is Piriton and then an injection of adrenaline if things worsen. We rarely use his adrenaline because Piriton usually does the trick IF GIVEN IMMEDIATELY. However, at 7 years he is too young to carry, open and adminster Piriton from a bottle and relies on school staff to do this for him. They regularly forget to carry it with them or have forgotten where they put it. This is very stressful and dangerous for a child experiencing a reaction so we have decided upon home education. With sachets he could return to school carrying his own medication; he would administer as soon as he felt unwell without the anxiety of being unable to unopen the bottle or overdosing; he would not have to rely upon very busy teaching staff who don't fully understand the severity of his condition.

I support this campaign as my daughter has a possible fish allergy and has reacted to something a few times, we went on holiday recently and I forgot to take the bottle of piriton with me and could not find any in the local shops for her age group (3), after 3 attemps I found boots had there own vs in a bottle though and had to administer this on a spoon in the car, which was very messy. I had packed calpol and Nurofen sachets, but not the big bottles of piriton I had at home, sachets would be handy to keep in my handbag or purse, just in case, and it might be good if doctors could prescribe them for the nurserys and schools as they have to keep big bottles for each child in there fridges?

I completely back this campaign. My daughter is allergic to a number of foods and I always need to carry piriton with me, including on flights and having sachets would allow me to do this with greater ease especially with the 100ml liquid restrictions when flying.

I have actually been unable to open the syrup on a number of occasions due it geting completely stuck up. I get the same problem with the own brand from Lloyds pharmacy. Not great when hives are popping up all over you and you can't even get the antihistamines you desperately need. If you have a dairy allergy you can't use normal antihistamines as these contain lactose/dairy. I have spoken to Lloyds pharmacy and they advise carefully wiping the jar after each use. Good advice but not always practical and it's very sticky syrupy stuff. So if you're out and about it's harder to clean. Very frustrating.
